Man tosses 3-year-old son, self off Manhattan high-rise roof
A 35-year-old Brooklyn man in a custody battle over his 3-year-old son tossed the toddler off a 52-floor apartment building in Manhattan before plunging to his death Sunday afternoon, law enforcement sources said.Authorities responded to South Park Tower on West 60th Street around noon and found the man, Dmitriy Kanarikov, dead at the scene. The boy, Kirill Kanarikov, was found alive but later died at the hospital, police said. The man and his son landed on two roofs on 59th Street, police said. Neither of them were visible from the sidewalk.Kanarikov had visitation rights with his son, but the boy's mother had custody, law enforcement sources said. The mother was waiting at a police precinct Sunday for Kanarikov to return her son when they plunged from the rooftop. Kanarikov and his son had no obvious connection to the building, and weren't stopped when they walked in, police said. It's not known why Kanarikov chose that spot, but authorities say he knew someone who once lived there.Building residents said they were shocked and saddened."How heartbreaking, how sad it is that there was no one there to stop them, to say, 'Wait, tomorrow is another day," said Ellia Adiel. In March, a woman clutching her baby son in her arms plunged eight stories out of a Harlem apartment window to her death, but the 10-month-old survived. Authorities found a suicide note in her home.
